As we celebrate Thanksgiving, the Alabama Nursing Home Association pauses to remember some of the reasons we’re thankful.

First, we’re thankful for nursing home residents. They give us a reason to smile and remind us what we do is important.

We’re thankful for administrators who tell us long-term care is hard work, but more importantly is a work of the heart. They remind us that our chosen profession is more of a calling than a career path.

We’re thankful for nurses who’ve devoted their lives to caring for others and show no signs of slowing down. They encourage us to keep going.

We’re thankful for activity and social service professionals who enrich the lives of nursing home residents every day. They’re tireless advocates for the people we serve.

We’re thankful for therapists who help patients walk and talk again. They prove we should never give up…no matter the situation.

We’re thankful for housekeepers, cooks, business office staff, building maintenance crews and countless other unsung heroes. They’re examples of how each employee plays an important role in providing quality health care.

We’re thankful for ANHA’s board members, officers, committee members and volunteers who donate countless hours of their time each year. They set ambitious goals for our organization and inspire us to achieve them.

We’re thankful for more than 2,000 people who attended our 12 educational seminars in 2015. They have a passion to learn and be the best.

We’re thankful for nursing homes that are willing to share their secrets to success so all can improve. They know everyone wins when we share best practices.

We’re thankful for the woman who wears the Ms. Alabama Nursing Home crown, and the ones who’ve worn it with grace and dignity in the past. They’re devoted ambassadors of Alabama’s long-term care profession.

We’re thankful for hundreds of community groups who partnered together and stood tall for Alabama. They’re the reason why people who depend on Medicaid can receive needed services.

We’re thankful nursing home residents and their family members are highly satisfied with the care they receive. It’s proof our decade long journey to improve customer satisfaction is working.

We’re thankful nursing students are able to complete their education because of generous donations from our members. They’re the next generation of caregivers.

We’re thankful for nursing home employees who go above and beyond to make a difference in the community. They show us caring goes beyond the walls of the nursing home.

We’re thankful for those who came before us with a vision to create an organization dedicated to improving long-term care. They’re the reason we’ll celebrate 65 years of leading the way in 2016. We stand upon their shoulders as we embrace the future.

Most of all, we’re thankful for an opportunity to make life better for the people who live and work in Alabama nursing homes. After all, that’s the reason our organization exists.

Those are some of the many things for which we’re thankful. What are you thankful for?

Happy Thanksgiving!
