SeniorGameslogoBIRMINGHAM – Nursing home residents and senior citizens from across Alabama will compete in Olympic style games this weekend. The competitors are part of the Alabama Nursing Home Association (ANHA) Senior State Games to be held June 20-21 at locations throughout the Birmingham area.

The ANHA Senior State Games is a partnership with the Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS) and the ASF Foundation. The games coincide with the ASF Foundation’s Alabama State Games XXXII.

“This is an opportunity for nursing home residents to showcase their talents and competitive spirit,” ANHA President Frank Brown said. “We believe competition and recognition will bring out the best in all who participate.”

The senior citizen and nursing home competitors will participate in age specific events that are conducted in a similar fashion to the Olympics. Competitions include archery, dominos, swimming and many others.

“I appreciate the partnership, especially the support of the Alabama Nursing Home Association in encouraging our seniors to be more physically active,” ADSS Commissioner Neal Morrison said. “Opportunities and venues like this allow our seniors to shine. I would like to encourage all seniors to become and stay active.”

Nursing home and senior citizen competitors will take part in the State Games XXXII Opening Ceremony on Friday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m. The ceremony will be held in the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex Arena.

“This partnership allows us to promote healthy lifestyles, physical activities and friendly competition among our Alabama seniors ages 50 and over,” ASF Foundation President Ron Creel said. “We look forward to the excitement and the smiles on our seniors’ faces as the Games begin.”
