Alabama Nursing Home Association to Sponsor Senior State Games

For Immediate Release: Monday, July 2, 2013

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Nursing Home Association (ANHA) today announced that nursing home residents and senior center attendees from across the state will have an opportunity to compete in Olympic style games in 2014.

The Alabama Nursing Home Association Senior State Games is a partnership with the Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS) and the ASF Foundation. The competitors will participate in age specific events that are conducted in a similar fashion to the Olympics.

“The Senior State Games will give nursing home residents an opportunity to showcase their talents and competitive spirit,” ANHA President Richard Brockman said. “We are proud to sponsor this event because we believe competition and recognition will bring out the best in all who participate.”

The ANHA Senior State Games will coincide with the ASF Foundation State Games XXXII. The games will be held June 20-21, 2014, in Birmingham, AL.

“This partnership will expand the reach of the State Games, and promote physical activity and competition among older Alabamians,” ASF Foundation Founder, President and CEO Ron Creel said. “We look forward to the students interacting with these senior competitors.”

“Governor Bentley has continuously reminded me that we need to find ways to keep our seniors physically active,” ADSS Commissioner Neal Morrison said. “This is one of many ways to ensure this, and I am elated that the Alabama Nursing Home Association is supporting their residents in these games.”

A special committee representing nursing homes, senior centers and the ASF Foundation will plan events that are in line with the age and ability levels of nursing home residents and senior center attendees.
