This is the first of eight articles highlighting nursing homes that will present at Alabama’s Best Practices on August 28.
These eight skilled nursing centers were selected from the 24 submissions to present their best practice on stage before hundreds of nursing home employees from across Alabama.
Athens Rehab Center & Senior Care will present its best practice: Dementia Assessment and Management. With this initiative, the nursing home is reducing the use of antipsychotic medications used by residents diagnosed with dementia and moving to more individualized behavior management techniques.
Every resident at Athens Rehab Center & Senior Care is assessed to determine if he or she has dementia. Those with dementia are further assessed to determine the level of dementia progression. From that research, caregivers are able to plan social interactions and activities best suited for each individual.
To implement this best practice, nursing home staff members are trained to use new behavior management techniques. Activity and nursing staff work schedules have been adjusted so the nursing home can offer more activities late in the afternoon and on weekends.
The individualized care is leading to improvements in “sun downing” by residents with early and middle stage dementia. Nursing staff are monitoring the monthly rate of antipsychotic drug use and recording how resident behaviors are affecting others as benchmarks for improvement.
