Today, the Alabama Nursing Home Association proudly celebrates 75 years of serving Alabama’s long term care community.

Since its incorporation on July 17, 1951, ANHA has served as the statewide voice for long term care providers, advocating for quality care, strengthening the workforce, supporting members through education and regulatory guidance, and working alongside policymakers and industry partners to improve the lives of older adults and individuals with disabilities.

For 75 years, one thing has remained constant—the dedication of the professionals who care for some of Alabama’s most vulnerable citizens.

“Our theme, ’75 Years of Caring and Commitment,’ reflects the compassion and dedication that have defined our members for generations,” said ANHA President & CEO Brandon Farmer. “This anniversary is an opportunity to honor those who built our profession, celebrate those serving today, and recommit ourselves to ensuring Alabama’s long term care communities remain strong for generations to come.”

ANHA represents approximately 98 percent of Alabama’s licensed skilled nursing facilities, along with a growing number of assisted living and specialty care assisted living communities affiliated with nursing homes. Alabama’s skilled nursing facilities serve more than 58,000 residents each year and employ nearly 31,000 direct-care professionals, while contributing billions to Alabama’s economy annually. These figures underscore the vital role long term care plays in both the state’s healthcare system and economy.

As part of its yearlong anniversary celebration, ANHA is proud to launch a dedicated 75th Anniversary webpage featuring:

  • Governor Kay Ivey’s proclamation recognizing July 17, 2026, as Alabama Nursing Home Association Day
  • A commemorative historical timeline publication chronicling ANHA’s history and key milestones since 1951
  • Decade highlights showcasing defining moments throughout the association’s history
  • 75 Stories of Care, a statewide initiative celebrating the compassion, innovation, and meaningful moments taking place every day in member communities across Alabama

The association is also recognizing outstanding professionals through its inaugural Leaders in Long Term Care Awards and Legends of Long Term Care Hall of Fame. Honorees will be recognized during ANHA’s 75th Anniversary Celebration at the Annual Convention on September 24.

“While we’re proud of our history, we’re equally focused on the future,” Farmer said. “Alabama’s population is aging, and the need for compassionate, high-quality long term care has never been greater. We remain committed to supporting the providers and professionals who care for individuals with complex medical and supportive care needs.”

As ANHA celebrates this milestone, the association extends its gratitude to the members, caregivers, residents, volunteers, partners, and leaders whose dedication has shaped the past 75 years. Together, we look forward to building an even stronger future for long term care in Alabama.
