FairHavenBP4Much of southern life centers on our love for food.

We eat at parties and holidays, have special dinners and menus for each season and enjoy each other’s company at meals.

By moving food to the center of resident activities, Fair Haven Retirement Center is improving two important aspects of nursing home care.

This is why Fair Haven’s “Party with Purpose” program is a 2014 Alabama’s Best Practice.

Fair Haven’s Life Enrichment team and household staff members are adding aroma, texture, residents’ taste preferences, family style seating and food to all facility events.

Residents plan menus, set party dates and design table settings. They encourage each other to attend events such as supper club, birthday parties and holiday or religious meals.

Thanks to “Party with Purpose,” Fair Haven is improving key health care and quality of life measures for nursing home residents.

First, improving food taste and increasing availability and frequency of food centered events helps prevent weight loss. Maintaining proper weight is an important aspect of helping residents remain healthy.

Second, activity participation is increasing because residents help plan events that are tailored to their preferences. Serving delicious food adds to the draw. Since implementing “Party with Purpose,” activity participation from increased from 10% to over 50%.
