Nearly 10 years into the state’s long term care transformation journey and Alabama nursing home residents and family members are reporting happiness with their care—at a steadily increasing rate that outpaces national improvement rates.

Similar to Georgia’s excellent skilled nursing home performance in 2013, providing quality long term care to its residents, Alabama is also making its mark on the national scale.

Alabama MIV InfographicIn 2013, 90 percent of Alabama residents gave an overall satisfaction rating of excellent or good in terms of the care they received and 91 percent would recommend their facility to others, according to data from My InnerView by National Research Corporation.

Performance factors: Improvement for Alabama nursing homes has outpaced the rest of the nation. According to My InnerView surveys collected in 2013, Alabama’s satisfaction and recommendation benchmarks for residents (90 and 91 percent, respectively) and families (90 and 90 percent) outperformed the national benchmarks for residents and families (88 percent across all four measures).

This is significant, as the My InnerView database is the largest for resident and family satisfaction benchmarks in the long term care profession with several thousand skilled nursing homes participating across the U.S.

In a recent blog post by the Alabama Nursing Home Association (ANHA), Frank Brown, president, said getting to this national level didn’t happen overnight; it’s a result of providing a superior environment that supports positive engagement between residents, families, and employees. More than nine years ago, ANHA implemented a quality improvement program using My InnerView products by National Research. This provides Alabama nursing home customers an outlet to report their perspectives and feedback on their skilled nursing care centers.

Below are a few highlights from the 2013 results:

  • 90 percent of families have stated they were satisfied and willing to recommend their loved one’s facility to others
  • Overall resident satisfaction and recommendation scores have improved by 6 percent (from 84 to 90 percent satisfaction and 85 to 91 percent for recommendation) since the program started in 2005
  • Overall family satisfaction and recommendation scores have improved by 4 percent (from 86 to 90 percent for both measures respectively) since 2005
  • Family scores improved in all four topical domains of the survey
  • Rating of ‘excellent’ versus ‘good’ has continued to increase over the years
