A Black History Month event at a Jefferson County nursing home was presented from a unique perspective.
That’s because the facility’s residents organized, lead and participated in the celebration.

Oak Trace Care & Rehab Center’s Black History Month celebration began with a prayer from Resident Council Vice-President Arnold Mushatt.
He was followed by Resident Council President Gwen Moss reading selections from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
Oak Trace volunteer Wyteria Coleman led the group of residents and staff in several songs. After singing, Ms. Coleman spoke about how God had delivered the slaves from slavery, and how he continues to deliver all of us from evil today and every day.
The program ended with former Resident Council President Willie Pruett leading everyone in singing the Lord’s Prayer.
“I appreciate all of the effort and time the resident and staff put into organizing this event,” Oak Trace Administrator Trina Vines said. “It was a very respectful and touching program that meant a lot to all of us.”
