Celebrating your 100th birthday is quite an accomplishment.
One north Alabama nursing home resident passed that milestone several years ago and is still going strong. In fact, she was recently recognized as the oldest resident at her facility.
Lucy Ford celebrated her 106th birthday on January 13, 2014, at Decatur Health & Rehab Center.
A special party held in her honor was attended by family, friends, nursing home residents and staff members. Mrs. Ford was given a plaque to recognize her as the oldest resident of the nursing home.
Mrs. Ford attributes her longevity to “Going to church, living right and doing right by people.”
Mrs. Ford grew up in a large family and has four brother and four sisters. Over the years, the family grew and Mrs. Ford now has almost 350 nieces and nephews through several generations. While Mrs. Ford is a widow and does not have children, she helped raise many of her nieces and nephews.
Over the years, Mrs. Ford was a homemaker, farmer and cleaned houses. She was born in Colbert County, and is a lifelong member of St. James Missionary Baptist Chruch.
“Mrs. Ford has been a blessing for us,” Decatur Health & Rehab Center Administrator Robbie Barnett said. “She enjoys riding around the nursing home in her wheelchair and attends gospel singings and church services.”
Mrs. Ford has lived at Decatur Health & Rehab Center since March 2012.
