TLC Nursing Center is the latest Alabama nursing home to earn high marks on its annual inspection.

After an exhaustive, three-day review of the nursing home’s operations and health care delivery, a team from Alabama Department of Public Health declared the center to be “deficiency free.” That means the skilled nursing care center meets all federal and state regulatory requirements. Staff at the Oneonta-based center were thrilled to learn the news.

“Being recognized by the state agency as being deficiency free is the ultimate for us,” TLC Nursing Center Administrator Angela Rose said. “This is a morale boost for our staff because the inspectors recognize how much we care about our residents and patients. It is not just a job; it is our life.”

The federal government requires all nursing homes to be inspected annually. The inspection covers every department and includes items such as medical chart reviews, interviews with residents and patients, infection control and more. Rose offers insight on the importance of being prepared for such a thorough review.

“We’re tasked by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to follow all of the state and federal regulatory requirements,” Rose explains. “We must follow these guidelines every day. You don’t just follow them when the inspectors are here. This is the way you provide care daily. The inspectors are looking at everything we do to make sure we’re following doctors’ orders and all of the regulations to make sure we’re providing the best possible care.”

It’s important to know that nursing homes are the only health care provider in Alabama that is inspected and certified by the government each year. That level of accountability is something nursing home residents and their family members can take comfort in.

“I advise all of our families to look about our survey history, review any concerns, visit the nursing home and take a tour,” Rose said. “You want to find the best possible place for your loved one and the survey results provide a snapshot of how the nursing home is performing. At the end of the day, the product we sell is nursing care and we want it to be the best it can possibly be.”
