Activity and Social Services professionals in metro Birmingham have elected a veteran nursing home employee to represent the area on a statewide board.

Barbara Johnson was elected on Wednesday to serve as Region III Director on the Alabama Nursing Home Association’s (ANHA) Activity & Social Service Auxiliary Board. The region covers all of Jefferson and Shelby counties.

Ms. Johnson is in her firth year as Activity Director at Eastview HealthCare Center in Birmingham. She has over 15 years of experience as an Activity Director, and has been employed in nursing homes for over 20 years. Ms. Johnson has two sons, two daughters and eight grandchildren.

She has already set goals for her time as leader of her peers in metro Birmingham.

“I want to see more families get involved with their loved ones in nursing homes and to come up with ideas to let families know what activity and social service employees do in the nursing home,” Ms. Johnson said. “I want them (families) to know that it is not a facility, but a place for their loved one to live and know that their loved on it truly cared for.”

Also on Wednesday, the group also elected Monikee Smith to serve as Assistant Region III Director. Ms. Smith is Social Services Director at Northway Health & Rehab in Birmingham. She holds a Masters in Social Work.

As Region III Director, Ms. Johnson will join other activity and social service directors  from across the state that provide strategic vision for ANHA’s Activity & Social Service Auxiliary. The auxiliary serves to educate and advance activity and social service professionals working in Alabama nursing homes.
