Alabama is joining other states to recognize nursing home residents and staff for their contributions to the community during National Skilled Nursing Care Week. Governor Kay Ivey issued a proclamation designating May 11-17 as National Skilled Nursing Care Week in Alabama.The proclamation commends nursing home employees for the care they provide to Alabama’s patients and residents. Gov. Ivey’s proclamation reminds the public that “nursing home residents of any age or ability are themselves a living history and a precious resource that should be treasured by all Alabamians.”

“I encourage my fellow Alabamians to visit nursing homes all year long and especially during this special weeklong celebration,” said Jim Walker, chairman of the Alabama Nursing Home Association’s board of directors. “Our members strive to provide high quality skilled nursing care in a home-like environment. I’m thankful Governor Ivey recognizes the importance of nursing home residents, staff and volunteers.”
National Skilled Nursing Care Week, formerly known as National Nursing Home Week, has been sponsored by the American Health Care Association since 1967. In Alabama, it is sponsored by the Alabama Nursing Home Association. The annual observance begins each Mother’s Day and continues through the following Saturday. The national theme for 2025 is “Tapestry of Life.” The theme highlights the vibrant and meaningful stories that weave together the lives of residents, families, caregivers and other staff. Everyone adds a unique thread that is woven into this vibrant tapestry. The theme encourages organizations to honor the relationships and moments that create a strong, united tapestry of care and compassion.

2025 National Skilled Nursing Care Week Proclamation
Proclamation By the Governor of Alabama
WHEREAS, the citizens of Alabama now residing in nursing homes, also known as skilled nursing care centers, also known as nursing homes, have contributed immeasurably to the heritage, success and growth of our state; and
WHEREAS, our nursing home residents of any age or ability are themselves living history and a precious resource that should be treasured by all Alabamians; and
WHEREAS, the staff and volunteers in nursing homes help residents live life to their fullest potential by providing a holistic approach to long-term care and short-term rehabilitation; and
WHEREAS, the member nursing homes of the Alabama Nursing Home Association are holding events in observance of National Skilled Nursing Care Week guided by this year’s national theme of “Tapestry of Life;” and
WHEREAS, National Skilled Nursing Care Week begins on Mother’s Day, May 11 and continues through Saturday, May 17, 2025; and
WHEREAS, this will be the 58th anniversary of National Skilled Nursing Care Week;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Kay Ivey, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim May 11-17, 2025, as National Skilled Nursing Care Week in the State of Alabama.
