As the Alabama Nursing Home Association looks ahead to 2026 – and a milestone 75th anniversary in July – we sat down with CEO Brandon Farmer to discuss what’s ahead for the association, its members, and Alabama’s long-term care community.
What excites you most about where ANHA is headed as we look toward 2026?
ANHA continues to transform and help define the trajectory for all points along the healthcare continuum. Representing 95% of Alabama’s licensed skilled nursing facilities, along with a large and growing number of assisted living facilities, uniquely positions us to drive outcomes for much of the state’s post-acute population. Nationally, ANHA is recognized for providing political and policy guidance driven by the needs of owners and operators. Being results-centric is what fuels our success and allows us to remain at the forefront of healthcare while developing partnerships that benefit all of Alabama.
What are the biggest opportunities for long-term care providers in Alabama next year?
Providers must continue to focus on resident-centered outcomes. As that focus remains strong, referral networks with hospitals and relationships with rural communities will offer opportunities not only for census growth, but also to redefine what post-acute care looks like in a skilled nursing environment. Communities will increasingly rely on our infrastructure in new ways, and it’s critical that we are prepared for that challenge.
Why is ANHA’s 75th anniversary an important milestone?
While ANHA is celebrating 75 years, skilled nursing facilities have existed in some form for far longer. Our role has been to protect and advance policy so facilities can continue delivering the highest level of care for Alabama’s elderly population. Serving members in a positive and productive way for 75 years is a significant accomplishment, made possible by owners, operators, caregivers, and association staff. This anniversary also provides an opportunity to set the trajectory for the next decade and beyond in a growing sector of healthcare.
What advocacy priorities will be top of mind in 2026?
It is imperative that our advocacy remain dynamic as we enter the final year of the quadrennium. We must remain nimble – driving change where necessary. ANHA will continue to advocate for appropriate funding on both the state and federal levels. We will also work to reform regulatory policies to reduce burdensome barriers to providing quality care. Everyone is aware that 2026 is a watershed election year in Alabama. All 140 members of the legislature are up for election, as well as each constitutional office. Ensuring member voices are heard during this season will remain our top priority.
How will ANHA continue strengthening support for members?
The strength of ANHA lies with its members and owners. Leadership development and transition are critical. We’ve seen other sectors lose influence due to complacency or lack of preparation, and our leadership is determined not to allow that here. We must also remain flexible and forward-thinking as healthcare continues to evolve.
How is ANHA addressing workforce challenges?
Workforce is the fuel that drives long-term care. The pandemic highlighted issues we now face, and there are no shortcuts to solving them. State leaders and policymakers have made strides to meet these demands through apprenticeship and education programs, but there is more work to be done. We stand ready to assist them as they navigate the challenge. We must play an active role in recruiting, educating, and retaining a workforce—showing that skilled nursing offers both economic opportunity and a meaningful calling.
How does ANHA support quality care amid change?
Our job is to ensure facilities and staff have timely, accurate information so there’s no disruption in care. ANHA staff does an incredible job communicating policy changes clearly and advocating aggressively for the care our members provide.
What message would you leave with members as we head into 2026?
Hang on—things may move quickly at both the state and federal levels. But rest assured, ANHA has your back. We will represent you in Montgomery, Washington, and wherever needed to ensure your work is recognized and residents receive the care they need and deserve.
