Volunteers play a very important role in the life of a nursing home.
Across the state, thousands of people donate countless hours each year to help nursing home residents live a higher quality of life. Each volunteer has his or her unique way of making each resident feel special.
As part of National Volunteer Week, one west Alabama nursing home let its volunteers know just how special they are to the facility and the people that call it home.
Colonial Haven Care & Rehab Center hosted a volunteer appreciation tea on April 10. Employees prepared a scrumptious spread of finger foods, desserts and delicious punch. Every volunteer was given a gift as a token of appreciation for their hard work and time spent serving Colonial Haven residents.
“We cannot thank our volunteers enough for all that they do,” Colonial Haven Administrator Rebekah Bonds said. “Their service shows others that each nursing home resident is a valuable part of our community.”
The volunteers serve in a variety of ways. Community organizations host monthly birthday parties for the residents; pastors and church members preach, hold Bible studies and lead song services; women in the community lead exercise and activity groups; hospice agencies visit residents and provide activities. In addition, men and women from across the community volunteer their services to spruce up the building and grounds.
National Volunteer Week was celebrated April 6-12, 2014 and is organized by Points of Light. Click here for more information about National Volunteer Week.
