They’re called super centenarians – people who live to be 110 or more years old.
A Barbour County nursing home resident recently reached that milestone and may be the oldest living man in Alabama.
Parkwood Health Care resident James Richardson celebrated his 110th birthday on January 2. The Eufaula native is believed to be the oldest living man in the state of Alabama. His birthday was celebrated with a party attended by family, friends, fellow nursing home residents and staff members.
In February, Congressman Mike Rogers (R-3rd Dist. AL) stopped by the facility to recognize the milestone, and announce that Mr. Richardson’s birthday was entered into the Congressional Record. Congressman Rogers presented him with a special framed copy of the Congressional Record.
About James Richardson:
Mr. Richardson has been married three times. His most recent wife passed away in 2012 at the age of 97. He has two sons, seven grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Richardson credits his long life to trusting God, treating people right and never depending on prescription drugs.
Over the years, Mr. Richardson has grown accustomed to certain things:
• Breakfast is his favorite meal of the day. He loves his grits with cheese and plenty of salt.
• He enjoys his coffee very hot with a lot of sugar.
• He walks and exercises with hand weights daily.
• His favorite foods are fried chicken and fried fish.
• Reese’s Cups and Moon Pies are his favorite sweets.
• Judge Judy, Maury, and Judge Joe Brown are his favorite television shows.
• He always wears a cap and likes to have longer hair.
• He only likes long sock that come up to his knees.
• He loves wearing sweatpants, but they must have pockets.
Finally, Certified Nursing Assistant Wanda Thorne is Mr. Richardson’s favorite person at Parkwood Health Care. He tells the staff he could not make it through the day without Wanda.
WRBL News 3, the CBS affiliate in Columbus, Georgia, aired a story about Mr. Richardson receiving the honor from Congressman Rogers.
