My name is Katie Dansby and I am a senior at the University of North Alabama majoring in Public Relations. I had the privilege of filming a pet therapy session at Cullman Health & Rehab Center for my Aural and Visual Production class.
Pet therapy is one of the many facility services offered to the patients and residents of USA Cullman Health and Rehabilitation Center. I joined the patients, residents, staff, a therapy dog, Raquel and her owner for a day at Cullman Health & Rehab Center.
Raquel is simply a loving animal for the patients, residents and even staff to enjoy. She offers kisses and love for anyone who would like to spend time with her. During my visit I was able to see this service of pet therapy in action.
An employee and charge nurse, Christy Ward, gave a testimony regarding the positive impact the therapy has on the patients. “It calms them,” she said.
A resident, Clara Jepsen, revealed to me how much she enjoys the animals coming to visit. “They’re just so sweet,” said Ms. Jepsen. She reminisced back to when she had a dog of her own and how much the pet therapy made her feel at home. Raquel’s presence encouraged each person to share memories and stories of pets they had in the past.
The day was a success for my project, but especially for the patients and residents. I received an A as a result of the help of the Cullman Health & Rehab Center staff, patients and residents. The staff welcomed me with smiles and excitement while the patients and residents enjoyed Raquel’s company.
Raquel’s therapy is free for all involved.
