Students from Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery hosted a large Christmas celebration for the residents of Prattville Health & Rehab. Over 50 students and more than a dozen adults from across the Montgomery area volunteered their time on a Friday night to entertain, minister and bring Christmas cheer to the 55 nursing home residents that attended the Christmas Prom.

Before entering the prom, each resident had his or her picture taken in Santa’s sleigh by a professional photographer. A student band played Christmas favorites such as “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Little Drummer Boy,” and “Joy to the World” while residents and students danced. Games included “Name that Christmas Tune” and “Christmas Bingo.” Throughout the night, residents snacked on a large selection of Christmas goodies. The Christmas Prom concluded with the crowning of George Law and Jimelyn Brown as the Prom King and Queen. The couple was selected by a vote of the nursing home residents.

Students and ministers visited the room of each resident that was unable to attend the prom to sing Christmas carols, offer prayer and deliver a bag of gifts.

“I appreciate all that the Frazer UMC students and volunteers did to spread Christmas cheer to our residents,” Prattville Health & Rehab Administrator Matthew Lewis said. “The residents enjoy interacting with young people. Events like these also show that nursing home residents are still an active and vital part of the community.”

The Christmas Prom caps off an active year for the junior high and high school students of Frazer UMC at Prattville Health & Rehab. The students visited the facility several times in 2013 to talk with the residents, play bingo and give manicures. Prattville Health & Rehab is a skilled nursing facility offering long term care, Alzheimer’s/dementia care and rehabilitation.
