Diversicare of Montgomery shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.

When Mr. Sewell arrived for rehabilitation following a serious fall, he faced significant challenges with mobility and everyday activities. But with determination, encouragement and the support of his rehabilitation team, he achieved something worth celebrating—a return home on his own two feet.

Before his hospitalization, Mr. Sewell had been completely independent. Following his injury, however, he was unable to walk without extensive assistance from two therapists and needed help with transfers, dressing, bathing and other daily activities.

His rehabilitation team developed a plan focused on rebuilding strength, improving mobility and helping him regain independence. Progress wasn’t always easy. At one point, changes to his weight-bearing restrictions prevented him from practicing walking for several weeks.

Rather than lose momentum, Mr. Sewell and his therapy team shifted their focus to upper-body strengthening, transfers and daily living skills. The facility also worked closely with his family and insurance provider to support his continued rehabilitation.

Throughout his recovery, Mr. Sewell remained eager to get back on his feet—sometimes so eager that therapists had to remind him of his restrictions!

When he was finally cleared to resume weight-bearing activities, his progress accelerated. By discharge, he could walk 50 feet with only minimal hands-on support and had achieved his goals for transfers, bed mobility and daily activities.

His departure was a celebration to remember. As the theme from Rocky played, Mr. Sewell walked down the facility’s red carpet while staff lined up to cheer him on. His daughter watched emotionally as her father celebrated the independence he had worked so hard to regain.

Watch the video below as Mr. Sewell takes his victory walk down the red carpet, surrounded by the team that helped him reach his goal of returning home.

We’re grateful to the facilities who have already shared their stories — keep them coming!
