From caregiver to resident, Betty “Betts” Phipps Roberts finds herself right where she belongs—surrounded by familiar faces, compassionate care and opportunities to pursue her lifelong passions.
Born in West Virginia in 1932, Betts earned her nursing degree from the University of Virginia in 1953 and went on to build a rewarding nursing career. Along the way, she raised a family, became a registered nurse in six states and discovered a remarkable talent for writing and painting.
In 1994, Betts joined Madison Manor Nursing Home in Madison, Alabama, as a Care Plan Coordinator RN. For four years, she worked alongside a team dedicated to providing quality care under Administrator Felita Smith.
After leaving Madison Manor in 1998, Betts continued nursing briefly before retiring to enjoy family life and her creative pursuits. Over the years, she published four books, developed a love for poetry and embraced oil painting.
Following the loss of her second husband and a fall at home, Betts returned to Madison Manor for rehabilitation. Her familiarity with the facility and the care she received made a lasting impression.
When Betts decided to make Madison Manor her permanent home on December 23, 2025, she found something especially meaningful: Felita Smith, the administrator she had worked with decades earlier, was still there.
Today, at 94, Betts continues to embrace her artistic talents. She can often be found painting in her room, participating in art shows and sharing her creativity with others.
A proud mother of seven and grandmother of 14, Betts has lived a life filled with family, faith, service and creativity.
Her journey is a beautiful reminder that the relationships formed in long term care can last a lifetime—and sometimes bring us right back where we started.
We’re grateful to the facilities who have already shared their stories — keep them coming!
