For nearly five decades, Betty Dowling dedicated her career—and much of her life—to caring for the residents of Extendicare. Her legacy is one of compassion, generosity and an enduring love for long term care.
Betty began her nursing career at Extendicare in August 1977 and continued serving residents until her passing in March 2026. To Betty, nursing was more than a profession. She genuinely looked forward to coming to work each day and poured that passion into the residents and staff on her hall.
She made sure birthdays and holidays were celebrated with decorations, food and special treats so residents, families and staff knew they were valued. Her generosity extended well beyond celebrations. Betty cared deeply for the staff she worked alongside, providing food, clothing and even gifts for their children when there was a need.
Her influence also reached future generations of caregivers. Throughout her career, Betty helped teach and encourage nursing assistants as they worked to become certified, sharing not only her knowledge but also the example she set through her own service.
When asked about retirement, Betty’s response reflected the calling that defined her life: “I love what I do. I look forward to coming to work each day.”
Betty may no longer be walking the halls of Extendicare, but the culture of care she helped create and the lives she touched remain part of her extraordinary legacy.
