Allen Health and Rehabilitation shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.

For more than 30 years, Mary Stewart Stephens has been a steady source of compassion, comfort, and advocacy for the residents and families of Allen Health & Rehabilitation in Mobile.

As a licensed social worker, Mary has spent her career helping residents navigate life’s challenges with dignity while supporting families through some of their most difficult decisions. Her calm presence, genuine empathy, and unwavering commitment have made her much more than a member of the care team—they have made her a trusted friend and advocate for countless individuals.

At Allen Health & Rehabilitation, coworkers affectionately know Mary as “The Heart of Allen.” The nickname reflects the kindness, wisdom, and compassion she brings to every interaction. Whether listening to a resident’s concerns, offering reassurance to a family, or mentoring fellow staff members, Mary leads with both her experience and her heart.

Her dedication to serving others extends beyond the workplace through her affiliation with the Daughters of Charity in Missionary Service, reflecting a lifelong commitment to faith, compassion, and caring for those in need.

Mary’s legacy is measured not only by her decades of service but also by the countless lives she has touched along the way. Her example reminds us that exceptional long term care is built on meaningful relationships, compassionate listening, and treating every resident with dignity and respect.

We’re grateful to the facilities who have already shared their stories — keep them coming!
