The story began when a local pastor (and former long term care administrator and continued long term care advocate) Trent Jackson – visited the facility to bring Communion to residents. During one of those visits, resident Mr. Burton approached him with a special request: he wanted to be baptized.
Because of Mr. Burton’s physical condition, traveling off campus for a traditional baptism service was not possible. Rather than allowing that obstacle to prevent him from taking this important step in his faith journey, the team at Diversicare of Pell City partnered with Eden Westside Baptist Church to bring the baptism service directly to the nursing center.
Working together, facility staff, church leaders, Mr. Burton, and his wife coordinated a special service inside the facility. Surrounded by those who cared for and supported him, Mr. Burton was able to be baptized in a meaningful ceremony that reflected both his faith and the community that had come together on his behalf.
The event served as a powerful example of person-centered care in action. While long term care providers meet residents’ physical needs every day, they also recognize the importance of supporting emotional, social, and spiritual well-being.
By listening to a resident’s request and finding a way to make it possible, the team at Diversicare of Pell City helped create a lasting memory for Mr. Burton and his family.
