Hanceville Nursing and Rehab Center shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.
Over the course of an extraordinary career, Charlene Guest has clocked in and out more than 142,500 times as a nurse—a remarkable testament to her unwavering dedication to long term care.
Charlene began her journey on October 1, 1967, as an 18-year-old newly graduated Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Hanceville Nursing & Rehab Center. Nearly six decades later, she remains a vital part of the team, having devoted her entire professional life to caring for residents in the same facility.
Throughout her career, Charlene has balanced life’s many milestones—marriage, raising children, and welcoming grandchildren and great-grandchildren—all while maintaining an exceptional level of commitment to her work. Known for her reliability and steady presence, she has carried out her responsibilities with consistency and professionalism every step of the way.
Over the years, Charlene has witnessed significant changes in the nursing profession—from starched uniforms and nursing caps to modern technology and electronic systems. Through it all, she has remained steadfast, adapting with grace while continuing to provide compassionate, high-quality care.
Her colleagues describe her as a quiet hero—someone who shows up day after day, year after year, without seeking recognition, but whose impact is deeply felt by residents and staff alike. Her resilience, humility, and dedication embody the very heart of long term care.
At Hanceville Nursing & Rehab Center, Charlene holds a special place in the hearts of those around her. As one team member shared, “We applaud her quite heroism – if she could be cloned, the world would truly be a better place.”
