Bill Nichols State Veterans Home shared this story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.
Mr. Calvin Hall proudly served his country for 24 years in the U.S. Army. In 2005, he moved into Bill Nichols State Veterans Home, arriving with everything he owned packed into several duffel bags — along with a lifetime of memories from his years of service.
While Mr. Hall is known for being soft spoken, his presence is well known among residents and staff alike. Over the years, he has built meaningful friendships with fellow veterans and become a familiar face throughout the home. He enjoys spending time relaxing in the sun, sipping on Cokes, snacking, and sharing friendly competition over games of checkers, dominos, and bingo.
Twenty years after first arriving, Mr. Hall’s story is a reminder that service does not end when the uniform comes off. What began with a few duffel bags and memories of the past has grown into new stories, lasting friendships, and a Bill Nichols family.
