Health care services funded by the Alabama Medicaid Agency have a far reaching impact.
With a series of reports entitled “The Cost of Cutting,” the Montgomery Advertiser is highlighting how potential cuts to state services will impact the people who depend on them. Recently, the newspaper shined spotlights on nursing homes and pediatricians.
In an article published Sunday, June 28, Montgomery Advertiser Journalist Bryan Lyman profiled Walter May, a man whose wife, Cheryl, receives long term care at Hillview Terrace Rehab Select in Montgomery.
Thanks to Medicaid, Cheryl receives dialysis and rehabilitation to help her regain her strength. Hillview Terrace staff regularly call Walter to update him on Cheryl’s progress. The nursing home care Cheryl receives gives Walter peace of mind as he raises the couple’s four great-grandchildren. As Walter says, “Without Medicaid, we’d fall through the cracks.”
The article further explains how Medicaid covers the cost of care for many nursing home residents and describes how those people require a higher level of medical care than ever before.

Cuts Could Hurt Pediatrician Services
The Montgomery Advertiser also examines Medicaid’s impact on pediatric services and how cuts to Medicaid could limit access to care for those with private insurance.
As one pediatrician says, “We have looked at a number of potential scenarios, all of them very dire for our practice and our patients.”
