Katie Morgan was recently elected 2015 President of the Alabama Nursing Home Association’s Activity & Social Service Auxiliary.

Katie is Social Services Director for Dadeville Healthcare Center. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Auburn University in 2008. She and her husband have two sons.

ANHA recently sat down with Katie and asked about her plans for 2015.

ANHA: How does it feel to be elected by your peers to lead the Auxiliary in 2015?

Katie: It means a lot and I feel honored and privileged to work with a great group of people and be part of the organization. It’s interesting to get to see behind the scenes of how the auxiliary works.

ANHA: What are your goals for the Auxiliary in 2015?

Katie: The number one goal is to keep increasing attendance at our region meetings. We are trying to change the methods of how we reach members in our regions to encourage them to attend. If more people attend and give us feedback, we better know what education needs they have. That way we can try to bring in speakers and materials that can benefit them.

ANHA: Why is it important that they attend the meetings?

Katie: To collaborate, to hear what our needs and wants are in our facilities. We may struggle in the same areas. The more we come together and talk its good to know we’re all dealing with it and work on ways we can improve it.

ANHA: Tell us about your background?

Katie: During college, I interned at Oak Park Nursing Home in Auburn and fell in love with it (long term care). I did not intend to work in nursing homes, but that’s where my internship landed. I’ve never wanted to do anything else. It’s where my heart is, it’s where my passion is and where I’m most comfortable is working with the aging population. A few years later, I went to work at Dadeville Healthcare Center and I love it. It’s a great facility.

ANHA: What does a social service employee do?

Katie: Meeting with families, making sure the residents have everything they need and serve as their advocate. We perform mood and behavior assessments, discharge planning and many other tasks. No two days are alike.
