At Kensington Health and Rehabilitation, Mardi Gras is more than a celebration—it’s a tradition designed to make every resident feel celebrated, beautiful and seen.
Each year, residents gather at the Dearborn YMCA for the annual Kensington Mardi Gras Ball. Activities Director Charlettle McVay and Director of CNAs and Administrative Services Mesha Neal begin decorating at sunrise, transforming the space into a colorful Carnival celebration by evening.
The preparation starts weeks earlier. About eight years ago, Administrator Kristen Birdsong began building a collection of evening gowns, suits and tuxedos so every resident who wants to attend can dress for the occasion. Before the ball, the collection becomes a boutique where residents can shop for their perfect look. On event day, additional staff help with hair, makeup, nails, shaves and dressing before escorting residents to the celebration.
The evening includes a royal court, complete with a Mardi Gras King and Queen, as well as the facility’s Empress of the Kensington Mardi Gras—an honor created to recognize a beloved longtime member of the Kensington family. Residents also enjoy a feast prepared by the dietary team, including red beans and rice and king cakes donated by community partners.
And the celebration doesn’t stop at the ballroom.
The Kensington Mardi Gras parade travels an eight-block route through downtown, with local bands, students, families, vendors and neighbors joining the festivities. The Mobile Police Department provides an escort, while the Downtown Fire Department’s ceremonial fire engine brings up the rear.
From the boutique to the ballroom to the parade route, Kensington’s Mardi Gras tradition demonstrates how creativity, teamwork and community can create unforgettable experiences for residents.
