Each Christmas, the front lobby of Highlands Care Center in Scottsboro becomes more than a place to gather. It becomes a celebration of the residents who call Highlands home, a remembrance of those who came before, and a way for the surrounding community to show its love and support.
The facility’s annual Angel Tree, organized by the Highlands Care Center Family Council, has grown into a cherished holiday tradition. Angel ornaments representing residents are placed on the tree and made available for purchase in honor of current residents or in memory of former residents whose lives and stories remain an important part of the Highlands family.
Local businesses, families, and individuals throughout Jackson County participate each year, choosing Angels to take home and hang on their own Christmas trees.
Proceeds from the ornaments go directly toward meeting residents’ needs and wishes, from warm clothing and comfort items to special gifts that bring extra joy during the holiday season.
But the impact of the Angel Tree extends far beyond the gifts it provides. The tradition serves as a meaningful reminder to residents that they are valued, remembered, and connected to a community that continues to care about them.
Through the dedication of the Highlands Family Council and the generosity of the Scottsboro community, a simple ornament has become a powerful expression of compassion and connection.
