At Keller Landing, meaningful activities often begin with a simple question: If our residents can’t go to the event, how can we bring the event to them?
That spirit of creativity was on full display during the community’s annual Keller Landing Derby, where residents experienced all the excitement and tradition of the Kentucky Derby without leaving home.
Residents gathered on the front porch, dressed in festive Derby hats and sipping mint juleps as they watched both the Kentucky Derby and a series of friendly races featuring Keller Landing staff. The day also included a unique resident race in which participants remained seated while using their legs to pull newspaper toward them—a fun challenge that encouraged movement, laughter, and friendly competition.
One unforgettable moment came when a resident hesitated to join the race, joking that he could never win because he didn’t have any toes. To everyone’s surprise—including his own—he crossed the finish line first.
That victory became much more than a fun memory.
The confidence he gained inspired him to become more engaged in his restorative therapy. Today, he has progressed to standing from his wheelchair and walking during therapy sessions—an incredible reminder of how meaningful activities can positively impact both emotional well-being and physical progress.
The Keller Landing Derby has become one of the community’s most anticipated spring traditions. Residents eagerly look forward to spending time outdoors, enjoying the beautiful weather, sharing laughs with friends and staff, and celebrating together. The event also brings the broader community together, with participation from the local Ombudsman, representatives from the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments (NACOLG), and other community partners.
At Keller Landing, bringing the world to residents creates more than memorable moments—it builds confidence, encourages independence, and reminds everyone that joy can be found in the simplest of celebrations.
