Sylacauga Health & Rehab shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.
When Tammy Hay walked through the doors of Sylacauga Health & Rehab in 1986, she expected to stay only long enough to complete nursing school and fulfill her commitment to the facility.
Nearly 40 years later, she’s still there.
What began as a temporary job for a 19-year-old Certified Nursing Assistant became a lifelong calling—one that has touched the lives of countless residents, families, and coworkers.
After advancing her career and becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse, Tammy had opportunities to go elsewhere. Instead, she chose to remain at Sylacauga Health & Rehab, where she felt she was meant to be.
“This is my purpose. This is my calling,“ she says.
Throughout her career, Tammy has celebrated joyful moments with residents, provided comfort during difficult days, and offered compassion and reassurance during life’s final chapters. Along the way, she has built lasting relationships that extend well beyond the walls of the facility.
Her husband often jokes that a quick trip to Walmart is nearly impossible because Tammy inevitably runs into former residents’ family members who stop to visit and catch up. For Tammy, those connections are one of the greatest rewards of a career devoted to serving others.
People frequently ask why she has spent nearly four decades in the same place. Her answer has never changed: she loves what she does, and she loves the people she serves.
At the end of every day, Tammy finds fulfillment in knowing she has made a difference—whether through a comforting touch, a kind word, or simply being present.
