Washington County Nursing Home shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.
There’s something special about Mardi Gras in a small town — the music, the laughter, the bright colors — and for our nursing home residents, it’s more than just a parade… it’s a moment to shine. 💜💛💚
Each year, our Activities Team works hand in hand with our residents to decorate their very own float for the annual town Mardi Gras parade. From stringing beads and hanging garland to choosing the theme and adding personal touches, our residents are part of every detail. The creativity, teamwork, and anticipation build excitement for weeks!
On parade day, the smiles say it all. Our residents proudly ride through town, waving to family and friends, tossing beads and “throws,” and soaking in the cheers from the crowd. For many, it brings back cherished memories of past celebrations, and for others, it creates brand-new ones.
This is what care looks like.
It’s not just meeting medical needs… it’s nurturing joy, purpose, and connection.
We are so proud to provide opportunities that keep our residents engaged in the community and remind them (and all of us) that life is meant to be celebrated at every age.
