The Healthcare Center at Buck Creek shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.
When Barry Wasserman first arrived at Buck Creek, he was confined to bed and uncertain about what the future might hold. Everyday tasks that once seemed simple suddenly felt out of reach, and the road ahead appeared challenging.
With the support of Buck Creek’s therapy and nursing teams, however, Barry began the difficult process of rebuilding his strength and independence.
Step by step, milestone by milestone, he worked toward recovery. What began with simply sitting at the edge of the bed progressed to standing — and eventually walking again.
Through determination, perseverance, and the encouragement of the staff around him, Barry pushed beyond what he once believed was possible.
Reflecting on his journey, Barry expressed deep gratitude for the people who supported him along the way.
“Thank you to the Buck Creek staff and therapy team for being more than just workers — you became my friends and family to me,” Barry shared. “Through your encouragement, patience, and belief in me, I went from sitting on the side of the bed, to standing, to walking again. You pushed me beyond what I thought I could do.”
He added, “I will always be grateful for the love and strength you gave me.”
Barry’s story is a reminder of the life-changing impact long term care professionals have every day through compassionate care, encouragement, and believing in residents during their most difficult moments.
