Palm Gardens Health and Rehabilitation shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative. 

Val Patterson began her career in the dietary department on August 11, 1989, at what was then Ideal Nursing Home. Through several ownership transitions over the years — from Ideal Nursing Home to Cogburn Midtown and later NHS — she remained a steady and caring presence. Today, after 36 years of continuous service, Val is the longest-tenured employee at Palm Gardens.

Working in the food and nutrition department, Val understands that meals represent far more than nourishment alone.

“She understands that a meal is more than just food — it represents comfort, routine, and care,” the facility shared.

Known for her warm spirit and genuine love for residents, Val consistently goes beyond her daily responsibilities to make those around her feel valued and cared for. Over the years, she has become more than an employee to many residents and families — she has become family.

“To many, she has become a familiar and comforting face they can always count on,” Palm Gardens shared.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Val’s career is her extraordinary reliability. Since beginning her career in 1989, she has never missed a scheduled day of work — an achievement that reflects her deep commitment to residents and coworkers alike.

Palm Gardens has also played a meaningful role in Val’s own life story. During her years at the facility, she raised three children while continuing to faithfully serve residents each day. According to the facility, Val often described her job as her “husband,” reflecting the devotion and commitment she poured into her work and the people around her.

On May 8, 2024, Val celebrated her wedding inside Palm Gardens, surrounded by the residents and staff she considers family. She chose to hold the ceremony at the facility so the residents she had cared for over the years could share in one of the most meaningful moments of her life.

The facility said the celebration beautifully reflected the spirit their “Our Family Caring for Yours” motto and the lasting bonds formed through long term care.
