75 Stories of Care: Submission #22

Each year during the week of September 11 remembrance, Marshall Manor hosts a special cookout to honor the first responders who serve the Guntersville community. For the past eight years, the event has welcomed members of the sheriff’s department, local police department, fire departments, school resource officers, EMTs, and emergency services personnel for a meal and time of fellowship.

What began as a simple gesture of appreciation has grown into a meaningful community tradition.

“The main reason we have this event is to let them know how much they are appreciated,” the facility shared.

The cookout includes hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, chips, desserts, and all the trimmings. Over the years, the event has adapted to meet different circumstances — moving indoors during bad weather, delivering meals during the COVID-19 pandemic, and continuing to provide food for anyone unable to attend in person.

For Marshall Manor residents, the event is one they look forward to each year.

Residents enjoy seeing the first responders in uniform, visiting with them, and interacting with the individuals who help protect and serve their community. Staff members also value the opportunity to connect with emergency personnel in a relaxed environment outside of crisis situations.

The event has also become a chance for first responders from different departments to gather together, share a meal, and spend time with one another.
