Cherokee County Health and Rehabilitation in Centre shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.
At Cherokee County Health and Rehabilitation, we believe that moving into long-term care doesn’t mean life slows down — it simply changes shape. Our residents remain part of the community, still full of dreams, still eager for connection, and always deserving of moments that make them laugh, explore, and feel alive. That belief inspired one of our most cherished traditions: the “Laughter Is the Best Medicine” program.
Each month during Resident Council, our residents brainstorm something “over the top” — an outing or experience that feels bold, fun, and just a little unexpected. Once the ideas are shared, they vote. If the winning choice is safe and feasible, we make it happen. No hesitation. No limits placed on joy.
Residents sign up, and then something truly heartwarming happens; staff members volunteer to accompany them — not for pay, not for recognition, but out of genuine love and compassion. These outings deepen bonds, build trust, and remind us all that care is more than clinical. It’s human.
Together, we’ve wandered through county fairs, marveled at sea life in an aquarium across state lines, visited local businesses, and stood in awe at Noccalula Falls. Each trip brings its own laughter, its own stories, and its own healing. Research shows that laughter reduces depression and pain, but we don’t need studies to prove it — we see it in the smiles, the brighter eyes, the lighter steps.
Our residents range from 30 years old to over 100. Some prefer quiet and require total care. Some enjoy crafts and limited activities. And some crave excitement, outings, and celebrations. A nursing home should never limit anyone’s life desires — only support them. Clinical care is essential, but so is laughter.
One resident, Stedman, said it best, “I like living here because I still get to live and go on vacations.” His words remind us how important this program is for those who still want an active lifestyle — and how important it is that we continue offering it.
At Cherokee County Health and Rehabilitation, life doesn’t stop at our doors. It grows, it connects, and it continues to be filled with joy — for anyone who wants it. Because here, laughter truly is the best medicine.
Health care can be demanding, and tough days are inevitable, but nothing compares to the reward of seeing our residents’ smiles.
We’re grateful to the facilities who have already shared their stories — keep them coming!
