Springhill Rehabilitation and Senior Residence shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.
At Springhill Senior Residence (SSR), one resident’s simple act of kindness has grown into something much bigger—bringing people together and making a meaningful impact beyond the walls of the facility.
Gary, a resident at SSR, has long been dedicated to collecting pull tabs for the local Ronald McDonald House, supporting families in need during difficult times. After moving to SSR, he continued this tradition with the same commitment and enthusiasm.
What started as an individual effort quickly turned into a shared mission.
By encouraging fellow residents and staff to save and donate tabs, Gary created an opportunity for others to get involved. The initiative brought people together around a common purpose—fostering connection, teamwork, and a spirit of giving throughout the community.
Gary’s efforts are a reminder that even the smallest actions can have a lasting impact. His kindness has not only supported an important cause but has also created an environment of generosity and compassion within SSR.
To recognize his dedication, Gary is rewarded with meals from Zaxby’s—a small but meaningful gesture that celebrates his efforts and brings him joy.
His story reflects the heart of long term care: creating opportunities for residents to stay engaged, give back, and continue making a difference.
