Rehab Select at Albertville shared the following story as part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative.
At Rehab Select of Albertville, care is about more than meeting physical needs—it is about creating moments of joy, connection, and purpose for residents each day. One activity that has truly brought their community together is drumming aerobics.
During these sessions, residents gather with excitement, each holding a drumstick and following along to music and guided movements. What may look like a simple activity is actually much more. Drumming aerobics encourages movement, coordination, and participation in a way that feels fun and uplifting rather than intimidating. Residents who may be hesitant to join other forms of exercise often light up when the music starts and the room fills with rhythm.
The energy during these sessions is contagious. Smiles spread across the room, laughter is shared, and residents cheer one another on as they drum along to the beat. Staff members join in as well, creating a sense of teamwork and togetherness that strengthens the bond between residents and caregivers. In these moments, the focus shifts away from limitations and toward ability, joy, and connection.
Drumming aerobics also provides an opportunity for residents to express themselves. Some tap softly and carefully, while others drum with enthusiasm and pride. Every beat reflects participation, resilience, and a shared sense of community. For many residents, it is not just an activity—it is a highlight of their day.
At Rehab Select of Albertville, drumming aerobics is more than exercise—it is a celebration of life, rhythm, and the joy of coming together.
We’re grateful to the facilities who have already shared their stories — keep them coming!
