As part of ANHA’s 75 Stories of Care initiative, this story was shared by a colleague who worked alongside and under Kathy Smothers for many years.
After nearly four decades of service in long term care, Kathy Smothers recently retired — leaving behind a legacy defined by leadership, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to residents across Alabama.
Kathy began her career in 1979 after graduating from the UAB School of Nursing, working as an ICU nurse before being encouraged to take a new path into long term care. In 1987, she stepped into her first role as a Director of Nursing — a decision that would shape the rest of her career. She became an Administrator in 1991 and went on to lead facilities with a steady hand and a clear sense of purpose, including more than two decades as Administrator at Ridgewood Health Care in Jasper. Her leadership journey continued as Executive Director at Oaks on Parkwood and later as Administrator at South Hampton. Most recently, she served as Assistant Vice President of Noland Health Services’ Senior Living Division, where she helped guide operations and mentor the next generation of leaders until her retirement on February 27, 2026.
Throughout her career, Kathy has been known not only for her expertise, but for the way she invested in people — both residents and staff. She has touched countless lives and served as a mentor to many, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working alongside her. “Kathy is a phenomenal leader and resident advocate,” one colleague shared. “She has made a difference in so many lives.”
Now she’s turning her focus to a new role — one she describes with the same warmth and humor that has defined her career. In retirement, her “bosses” are her grandchildren – a six-year-old little girl and a four-year-old little boy.
After a lifetime spent caring for others, Kathy’s legacy will continue to be felt in the communities she served, the leaders she mentored, and the residents whose lives she helped shape.
