As ANHA’s Careers in Aging Month series continues, we recognize Matthew Doucet, a Certified Nursing Assistant at Columbiana Health and Rehabilitation.
Matthew joined the long term care field in July 2025 after realizing he wanted a career that offered deeper purpose and meaning. With an interest in healthcare and a desire to make a positive impact, Matthew chose long term care for the opportunity to provide compassionate, patient-centered care for seniors, helping them maintain dignity and quality of life.
For Matthew, the importance of his work is reinforced every day.
“I’m reminded why this career matters during every shift — from helping residents regain independence to simply providing comfort in moments of distress,” he said.
Though early in his career, Matthew says working in long term care has already shaped him both personally and professionally. The experience has encouraged him to live more intentionally and to be mindful of the example he sets for others.
“I try to be more present in my daily life and pay attention to how I carry myself, always striving to lead by example,” he said.
One of the most meaningful parts of the job for Matthew is the trust he builds with residents.
“I enjoy the sense of security I can provide residents. Building that trust takes consistent presence and respectful, attentive care — and that’s something I take great pride in,” he said.
Matthew stays motivated by focusing on small victories, practicing gratitude, and helping foster a supportive team environment. He also credits his mother, Janet Edwards, along with the nursing staff at Columbiana Health and Rehabilitation, for influencing and encouraging him in his career.
