ANHA is proud to highlight Mary “MeMe” Bowers, Lead AM Cook at Caregivers of Pleasant Grove, as part of our Careers in Aging Month series.
With 47 years of experience in long term care, Mary has spent her career serving residents and staff through the Dietary Department. She began as a Dietary Aide and, after 10 years, moved into her role as a cook — a position where she found her true calling.
“I’d like to say that the long term care industry found me,” she shared. “While I thought I wanted to work in Housekeeping it turns out that Dietary was where I really belonged all along.”
For Mary, the impact of her work is seen in the joy that a good meal can bring. She recalls how the compliments she receives — especially from residents — have fueled her passion over the years.
“I’m reminded daily how much the residents and staff look forward to a good meal,” she said.
Whether it’s preparing favorites like fried chicken, chicken and dressing, or special dishes for events, Mary takes pride in creating meals that bring comfort and connection to those she serves.
Her role has shaped her in meaningful ways, allowing her to pour her heart into feeding others and creating a sense of home within the facility.
The relationships she has built over the years are what continue to inspire her.
“Residents and staff at Caregivers are my family,” she said.
Mary remains motivated by the opportunity to return each day and continue serving others. She also credits a former coworker, Elizabeth Harris, for encouraging her early in her career and helping her grow into her role.
Thank you, Mary, for the difference you make every day!
