Recent changes at a northwest Alabama skilled nursing care center are leading to positive quality outcomes.
Acquired by Genesis HealthCare in September 2014, Glenwood Center in Florence recently earned a perfect score on its first government inspection since the change.
While business acquisitions can be challenging, Glenwood staff members rose to the occasion.

Glenwood Center’s leadership teams shows a “O” (zero) to signify state inspectors found zero deficiencies. Pictured from left to right: Administrator Dana Runager, Assistant Administrator Rhonda Poole, Director of Nursing Services Lynn Joyner and Assistant Director of Nursing Services Keri Vickery.
“I can’t say enough about how hard the staff have worked, and all the changes that they’ve gone through,” Glenwood Center Administrator Dana Runager said. “They worked a lot of late hours and attended a lot of family and resident meetings to get everyone ready for the change. I’m super proud of my team!”
Federal law requires nursing homes to be inspected every year. In Alabama, that job is assigned to the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH). An ADPH inspection team spends several days on-site reviewing every aspect of a nursing home’s performance and talking to residents, staff and family members. Nursing homes that meet all criteria are proclaimed deficiency free meaning they earned a perfect score.
“It’s easy for your boss to come in and tell you ‘You’re doing a great job’,” Runager added. “It’s another thing to have an outside agency come in and say ‘You’re doing a great job, you’re meeting the expectations.’”
According to the latest data available from the American Health Care Association, 5.3% of Alabama nursing homes have been declared deficiency free in the past year.
