Dental care is much more than keeping your teeth shiny and bright. Proper oral hygiene, healthy gums and strong teeth are directly related to a nursing home resident’s ability to fight infection and maintain proper nutrition and weight.
Crowne Health Care of Mobile has demonstrated this and more since implementing an onsite dental program in 2013. Under the “Healthy Seniors Dental Program,” enrolled residents receive cleanings and examinations at the nursing home from a local dentist and dental hygienist.
The nursing home resident’s comfort is front and center with this program. Residents receive care in their nursing home which eliminates the stress and anxiety of traveling to an appointment. Residents don’t have to transition to a traditional dental chair which is beneficial for those who have difficulty transferring. The dental professionals perform procedures while the resident sits in his or her wheelchair or another chair of their choosing. For the nursing home, the program reduces transportation costs and staff members don’t have to travel with and assist residents during offsite appointments.
Since implementing the Health Seniors Dental Program, Crowne Health Care of Mobile has seen reductions in the risk of oral infections and the related antibiotic usage and fewer residents are at risk of weight loss. The program has also provided 82 appointments related to dentures and 56 appointments related to extractions and debridement.
Crowne Health Care of Mobile will present “Healthy Senior Dental Program” at Alabama’s Best Practices February 13 in Birmingham.
