Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander City and William F. Green State Veterans Home in Bay Minette received perfect scores during recent inspections from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

“We’re honored to proudly serve those who ensured that our freedoms and liberties are upheld by serving in the U.S. Armed Forces,” William F. Green State Veterans Home Administrator Brian McFeely said. “The dedication of our staff for our veterans shows every day, and having the recent VA acknowledgement allows us to see that we are accomplishing our mission.”

Just like other nursing homes, state veterans homes are inspected annually by the Alabama Department of Public Health. However, state veterans homes have additional oversight from the VA. The VA measures veterans home on 158 standards that are either met or not met.

The VA inspection is always led by a team from a local VA hospital. For these inspections, the teams consisted employees from the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Ascellon Corporation, a company the VA contracts with to inspect veterans homes. The team spent several days inspecting every facet of care at each veterans home before determining each facility met all VA standards.

“The little things we do each day have the power to affect a great number of people,” Bill Nichols State Veterans Administrator Garrette Woodham said. “This accomplishment exemplifies the hard work and dedication each employee demonstrates every day.”
