Ms. Verdell Goodson was crowned Ms. Alabama Nursing Home 2013 during the Ms. Alabama Nursing Home Pageant held at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham – The Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover on Monday, July 22. She was crowned by Miss Alabama 2013 Chandler Champion, who was co-host of the event.
Ms. Goodson, age 79, is a resident at Enterprise Health and Rehab Center in Enterprise. At her nursing home, Verdell has participated in the Coffee County Relay for Life, is a member of the resident council and plans to start a welcoming committee. She and her husband, B.J., have been married for 62 years and both live at Enterprise Health and Rehab Center.
As Ms. Alabama Nursing Home, Ms. Goodson will travel to various nursing homes and community events to share her experiences. During her reign, she will also serve as an ambassador for nursing home residents at several Alabama Nursing Home Association events.
The runners-up are:
- 1st Runner-up: Elaine Blankenship, Ms. Woodland Village Health Care, Cullman, Age 79
- 2nd Runner-up: Jane Lucas, Ms. Andalusia Manor, Andalusia, Age 64
- 3rd Runner up: Martha Grant, Ms. Talladega Health and Rehab, Talladega, Age 78
- 4th Runner up: Ruth Elaine Alexander, Ms. Florence Nursing & Rehab Center, Florence, Age 87
The top 10 finalists from the field of 70 contestants had individual interviews with the panel of celebrity judges before competing on stage for the crown. All of the other contestants in attendance were part of the Honor Court and were individually recognized during the pageant.
“Each lady is a winner because she shares her optimistic outlook on life with her fellow residents and is actively involved in the life of her nursing home,” Alabama Nursing Home Association President Richard Brockman said. “These contestants are wonderful ambassadors of Alabama’s long term care profession and their individual nursing homes.”
