One of Alabama’s most unique nursing homes has earned high marks from the government.
Montgomery Children’s Specialty Center, a nursing home that only cares for children, has been declared “deficiency free” by the Alabama Department of Public Health. “Deficiency free” signifies the center meets all the state and federal requirements for nursing homes. The result comes after an intensive, three-day inspection during which a team carefully reviewed every aspect of the 54-bed center.
“Our team came together earlier this year and set one goal – to make sure our patients receive the highest quality of care possible,” Administrator Veronicia Johnson said. “Keeping that goal in mind every day made this deficiency free survey possible. This team is outstanding and very deserving of this honor.”
Federal law requires nursing homes to be inspected annually. The inspections are unannounced and take days to complete. The process is carried out by a team of trained inspectors from the Alabama Department of Public Health. Medical records, food safety, maintenance and cleanliness are just some of the areas reviewed.
“The inspectors look at everything, and I mean everything,” Johnson explained. “For example, they review nursing to make sure we’re providing the highest quality of care for all residents, administration to make sure we’re handling everything properly in the business office, social services to make sure we address any grievances as well as housekeeping, laundry, dietary and maintenance – just to name a few.”
Montgomery Children’s Specialty Center is unique because it is one of only two Alabama nursing homes that provide pediatric services and care exclusively for children who are disabled and require 24-hour a day medical care.
“We have an important mission and provide a critical service to the children and their families,” Johnson said. “Our staff works hard to care for the children while keeping family members informed. I could not be more proud to work alongside our caregivers.”
