There’s a new name and a new theme for one of the most important weeks of the year for nursing homes.
National Nursing Home Week will now be called National Skilled Nursing Care Center Week. The name change reflects the increasingly complex medical care provided in these facilities and the diversity of people receiving long-term care and short-term rehabilitation.
Held annually since 1967 and always beginning on Mother’s Day, National Skilled Nursing Care Center Week (NSNCW) is May 13-19, 2018. The observance is sponsored by the American Health Care Association and recognizes the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities.
2018 Theme: Celebrating Life’s Stories
“Celebrating Life’s Stories” is the 2018 theme for NSNCW. It serves as a tribute to life’s most significant events, relationships and experiences that shape the unique perspectives of residents, families, staff and those in the surrounding community.
The American Health Care Association offers further insight on the theme: “In skilled nursing care centers across the country, each person has a unique story to tell. If you take the time to listen to how life’s most significant events, relationships and experiences have shaped who others are today, you’ll cultivate a shared sense of purpose and deeper understanding of your center and the surrounding community. Narrating one’s life story can be an enriching experience for both the story teller and the listener. In 2018, skilled nursing care centers will pay homage to the kaleidoscope of perspectives that residents, families and staff bring to interactions every day with the theme, ‘Celebrating Life’s Stories.’”
The Alabama Nursing Home Association encourages you to visit and learn the life stories of the people who live and work in its member skilled nursing care centers.
