New Scholarship Program Available for Nursing Students at Alabama Community Colleges

More than 40 Students to Receive Financial Aid Each Semester

July 21, 2008

MONTGOMERY – Alabamians working to better their lives through education and a career in the health care profession have a new financial aid resource. The Alabama Nursing Home Association (ANHA) Education Foundation and the Alabama Community College System announced today a new scholarship program for Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) students attending community colleges.

“Licensed Practical Nurses are very important to the operation of nursing homes and are the helping hands that provide our residents with a high quality of care,” ANHA Education Foundation Secretary-Treasurer Louis Cottrell said. “Our foundation is glad to provide a helping hand to Alabamians who are working toward improving their lives and are interested in the health care profession. We hope this scholarship program will give LPN students additional resources to complete their degrees.”

Each of the 22 two-year colleges offering LPN training will receive two scholarships for a total of 44 annual scholarships statewide. The ANHA Education Foundation will provide each recipient $500 per semester for two semesters for a total of $1,000. The Dean of Nursing, Dean of Students, and Financial Aid Director at each college will choose the two recipients for their college. The student can use the money for books, uniforms and other school-related expenses.

“The health care facilities of this state need trained individuals capable of providing the service and care that patients need,” Bradley Byrne, chancellor of the Alabama Community College System said. “One of our system’s main focuses is providing that training to the new professionals within the health care field, and this partnership allows us an avenue to do that.”

The scholarships will be available beginning with the 2008 Fall Semester. LPN students interested in applying for the scholarships should contact the Director of Nursing at their community college.

LPN students must meet the following scholarship eligibility requirements:

  • Alabama resident enrolled in a public two-year college
  • Successfully completed one semester of the LPN program with at least a 2.5 GPA and be enrolled for the upcoming semester
  • Must perform part of their clinicals at a long-term care facility
  • Complete the scholarship application and demonstrate financial need
